The Methanol Institute, a global trade association for the production of methanol, has added the marine fuels business unit of TotalEnergies to its list of members.
When used as a marine fuel, methanol has clean-burning qualities that could cut harmful emissions by 60%. What’s more, its energy density is high enough to avoid affecting load capacity, and the technology to use it is available today for both new builds and retrofitting to existing fleets.
Using methanol that is made from natural gas can cut carbon dioxide emissions by 10% to 15%, but this can be as high as 90% when using sustainably produced methanol. Last year, TotalEnergies, which also makes products like the Total Azolla hydraulic oils, launched the e-CO2Met project to produce carbon-neutral methanol from captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen.
Speaking for TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, Frederic Meyer said that low-carbon methanol was turning out to be an attractive alternative with substantial potential for reducing the maritime sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. He also said:
