TotalEnergies has agreed with Plastic Energies to progress the advanced recycling of plastic, enabling the latter company to construct a second plant in Spain to process plastic waste at the end of its life.
Plastic Energies uses its patented technology to recycle end-of-life plastic waste, which would normally end up in landfills or pollute the environment, into a feedstock called TACOIL, which TotalEnergies can then use to produce polymers equivalent to those made from virgin stock. These can then be employed to produce food-grade packaging.
Both Plastic Energy and TotalEnergies, which makes industrial lubricants like the Total Equivis hydraulic oils, have committed to solving the problems presented by plastic waste by advancing the circular economy. The new agreement builds upon existing agreements between the two companies, including a 2020 announcement of a joint venture to construct a waste-conversion plant in France, which is set to come online in 2023.
In a statement, TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President for Polymers, Valérie Goff, said about the announcement:
“This new project with Plastic Energy in Spain follows two collaboration projects already announced in France and the U.S. Those projects contribute to addressing the challenge of the circular economy and to our ambition of producing 30% recycled and renewable polymers by 2030.”
